The event will start at 8AM on Sunday 8/26 and run until 5PM. The goal is to expose the community to many of the positive aspects of riding a bicycle. The Birmingham Bike Festival, located in downtown Birmingham, Michigan will highlight the health benefit of the exercise itself the environment and economical benefits of riding ( less gas, fewer trips to the doctors office, less car traffic on the road) how your bike can be a safe means of transportation different routes within the area local organized bike rides and the best part of all, it's free.
Racing:
There will be amateur and
professional races set up on a pre-determined course. For all racers who pay an
entry fee (there are different categories based upon abilities) there are cash
prizes up to $10,000.00. For the free, “fun races” which include children,
family members and community/municipal employees, there will be prizes and
gifts.
Children/Families:
- There will be a “kid's corral” that
demonstrates riding safely in the neighborhoods.
- Safety Clinic to show riders how to properly
wear a helmet and the need to wear one.
- Mechanical Inspection will be done by a bike
mechanic to check the safety of your bike and what needs to be done to get it in
proper working condition.
- Urban Riding awareness to inform cyclists the
safe techniques of riding in the area, how to be cautious of cars and
pedestrians and to always be a good ambassador by following the safe rules of
the road.
Vendors:
There will be a “bike fair” in
Shain Park with booths set up from local Birmingham retailers, and
restaurants. In addition, we will have
major bicycle manufactures, clothing lines, accessories, and nutritional
products to demonstrate and sell their products.
We encourage everyone attending the event to ride to the
festival: there will be a bike ”valet” to park your bike while you enjoy the
event.
The goal is to make the community aware of the benefits of
riding, encourage people to support trail systems for bicycles, and mutual respect
for all who are part of the process.
